What does the “Meanwhile in...” meme mean?
This format expresses gentle irony and surprise at the unexpected. It highlights behaviors or natural phenomena perceived as exaggerated, dangerous, or simply goofy. Users enjoy confirming their cultural prejudices about a country while amused by the disparity between the serious tone of the introduction and the ensuing visual chaos.
Where does the “Meanwhile in...” meme come from?
The “Meanwhile in…” meme appeared on the 4chan forum, specifically in the /b/ section, in early February 2010. The earliest documented example features an inverted image of a Holden Commodore, an Australian vehicle, accompanied by the caption “Meanwhile in Australia.” This creation plays on the geographic joke that Australia is literally “upside down” because it is located in the Southern Hemisphere. The exact date of the first publication remains unknown, as does the precise author of the original image. The reference page on Know Your Meme was added on April 23, 2010, but this date likely marks its popularization rather than its initial invention. The format borrows an older cinematic narrative device: “Meanwhile, back at the ranch…,” used in silent westerns to signal a simultaneous change of location. Here, “Meanwhile in X” introduces a scene supposedly happening elsewhere, presenting an absurd or spectacular event linked to the stereotypes of the mentioned place.
