What does the “I Love The Power Glove. It's So Bad.” meme mean?
The expression plays on the double meaning of "bad." In 80s slang, it could mean "cool," but here it highlights the product's technical failure while being delivered with earnest gravity. It is used to mock a well-intentioned but failed effort, or to humorously praise something terribly bad.
Where does the “I Love The Power Glove. It's So Bad.” meme come from?
The line comes from the American film "The Wizard," released in 1989, often described as a long advertisement for Nintendo. It is spoken by Lucas Barton, played by Jackey Vinson, who portrays the competitive antagonist. In a key scene, Lucas presents the Power Glove, a hand-worn NES controller, and tests it on "Rad Racer." After his demonstration, he declares: "I love the Power Glove. It’s so bad." At the time, the term "bad" could denote something cool or impressive in youth slang, making the line ambiguous. The irony arises from the contrast between the gadget’s disastrous reputation and the actor’s emphatic seriousness. The video later circulated online, notably via the VG Legacy channel, becoming a symbol of unintentional humor linked to failed tech products.
