“Il en pense quoi votre frère ?” meme: meaning, origin and common card

What does the “Il en pense quoi votre frère ?” meme mean?

The question is deliberately absurd: asking a stranger what their brother thinks, as if he were standing right there. It stands for deadpan humor and the comic discomfort of people caught off guard. French speakers pull it out to ask for the opinion of an absent relative, to tease someone who speaks on another person’s behalf, or to react to an unrequested opinion. The tone is teasing, never hostile, built on the idea that a simple question turns irresistible when asked with total confidence.

Where does the “Il en pense quoi votre frère ?” meme come from?

The segment comes from Camille Combal, host and columnist on Touche pas à mon poste, Cyril Hanouna’s talk show. According to French Wikipedia, it belongs to the period between autumn 2015 and 2018, when he adapted short bits from the Norwegian programme Karl Johan, aired on NRK, whose original version is titled “Broren til”. The format is a parody of the street interview: passers-by are stopped outdoors and asked about their brother, which gives the segment its name, sometimes reworded as “Il en pense quoi ton frère ?”. Clips were widely reposted on the show’s video channels, with dedicated best-of compilations, which turned the line into a staple of French entertainment television.
