What does the “Rico appel la femme” meme mean?
The meme revolves around an endless shout, “WOOOOMMMAAAN”, delivered with a hunter's total faith in his call. It teases clumsy flirting, but also any plea made so loudly it cannot work. People imitate the cry in voice notes, texts or videos, tease a friend who is desperately looking for someone, or caption a scene where a character yells into the void. The comedy rests on stretched vowels and the dead-serious comparison with hunting.
Where does the “Rico appel la femme” meme come from?
Stéphane Rousseau is a Quebec comedian, actor and host born in 1966 in LaSalle, near Montreal, who began at the Juste pour rire festival in 1988. The Rico character and his call to women come from one of his sketches, posted on YouTube as “Rico Chico” or “Rico appelle la femme” and even re-enacted by amateurs at cabaret nights. The cry compared to a caribou hunter's call became a standalone quote, cut into clips and typed out with stretched letters.
