Where does the “In France, They Don't Say "I Love You"” meme come from?
The format originated from a Tumblr post made on April 14, 2013, by user werepuppyscott. The post suggested that in France, instead of saying “I love you,” one would say a complex sentence related to Les Misérables: “that man stole a piece of bread and I will hunt him for the rest of his life before dating him, I mean putting him in jail.” This references the dynamic between Javert and Jean Valjean. The concept quickly spread, allowing fans to adapt the structure to other franchises by substituting romantic lines with internal lore or conflicts.
