Where does the “Squad” meme come from?
The exact origin of the term remains unknown outside oral communities. On March 24, 2004, a user named Greenie posted a definition on Urban Dictionary, attesting to its pre-existing use in African American vernacular English and hip-hop culture as synonymous with “crew” or “posse.” Massive online diffusion occurred around 2014-2015 with the phrase “squad goals,” viralized on Twitter, Instagram, and Tumblr. A YouTube clip from October 4, 2014, shows Donna Goudeau shouting “Pimp Squad Baby for life,” but this does not constitute the general meme’s origin.
