What does the “Je m’en bats… De Bruyne” meme mean?
The line states blunt, unfiltered indifference from someone asked for an opinion who has none. Coming from a top-level athlete, it gains flavour: the contrast between the stakes of an international tournament and the offhand remark makes people smile. It is used to close a pointless debate, to react to an overly specific question or to admit having no opinion. The phrase is crude and familiar, better kept for chats among friends than formal settings.
Where does the “Je m’en bats… De Bruyne” meme come from?
Kevin De Bruyne, a Belgian midfielder, played for Manchester City from 2015 to 2025 before joining SSC Napoli. During Euro 2016, after Belgium qualified for the round of 16 on Wednesday 22 June 2016, he answered a reporter’s question with this phrase, caught in a news video. Another sequence shows him when the Red Devils returned to Belgium, in front of supporters in Brussels, repeating the line. These extracts, reposted on YouTube under titles quoting the phrase, became a French-language meme, reused to add a mocking “we’ll remember this”.
