What does the “Check meuh meuh” meme mean?
The check meuh meuh is a playful way to say hello, mixing a fist-bump “check” with the cow’s moo. It evokes Franche-Comté, its farms and grazing landscapes, while staying good-natured. People use it to greet friends with humour, to lighten the mood or to recognise one another when they have roots in the region. The formula works like a friendly password: whoever throws it out wants a smile back, not a serious answer.
Where does the “Check meuh meuh” meme come from?
Madeleine Proust is a character created in 1982 by Laurence Sémonin, who described her as a Franche-Comté farmwoman born in April 1923 in the imaginary village of Derrière-Les Gras, near Morteau in the Haut-Doubs. Gérard Bôle du Chaumont, the creator’s partner, picked the name as a nod to Proust’s madeleine. The “Tchek Meuh Meuh” is among the titles of that repertoire, with words and music by Gérard Bôle du Chaumont. Videos spread the gesture, including a Madeleine Proust clip and short extracts explaining how to say hello in Franche-Comté. Since then, the check meuh meuh has circulated online as a humorous greeting.
