In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “L’Aaaaaarabe !” is a common card of the Memes FR pack, number 1374 of the collection, and the 753rd best-known meme of its 3495 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.
What does the “L’Aaaaaarabe !” meme mean?
The parody reuses the mechanics of the original ad, where a stretched cry ends the scene, and swaps the word to create a comic effect. The pleasure comes from recognition: everyone hears the jingle-like rhythm before even grasping the new line. People use it to flag an ad spoof, to praise a neat edit or to imitate a rallying cry in a group. The meme belongs to the culture of détournement, where a well-known spot is made to say something else.
Where does the “L’Aaaaaarabe !” meme come from?
The original is an advert for Tipiak, a French food company born in 1967 from the merger of the Groult and Billard houses. In November 1993, a spot directed by Jean Becker shows five Breton women in bigoudène headdresses, aged 71 to 91, shouting “Pirates! Ils ont volé notre recette!” (“Pirates! They stole our recipe!”). That cry became one of the most memorable slogans of French television and fed many spoofs, such as “La Mère Tipiak”. “L’Aaaaaarabe!” is one of them: it imitates the staging and the stretched exclamation of the spot. The detournement relies on rhythm and voice more than on text.
