What does the “Je veux un Houloucouptere” meme mean?
The phrase rests on a twisted word and an approximate description that dodges the exact term. It expresses the naive request of someone who wants something without knowing its name. People use it to ask for a gift with childlike excitement, to imitate the sketch’s accent among friends, or to gently tease an explanation going in circles. The comedy comes from the rhythm of the syllables, the forced accent and the gap between the precision expected of an object name and the vague picture given instead.
Where does the “Je veux un Houloucouptere” meme come from?
The line comes from a sketch by comedian D’Jal about Portuguese people, widely shared on YouTube. In the scene, a character tries to name a helicopter. He first describes it as “oune avion avec des ghélice”, then pronounces the word as “hou-lou-coupe-tere”. Several uploads of the sketch carry the word in their title, with various spellings such as “houloucoupoutere”. The comedy is accent imitation, a classic of stand-up shows. The sketch rests on an everyday word the character cannot pronounce properly. Out of context, the passage became an easy-to-remember refrain, quoted in comments, short videos and chats between friends, often by people who have never seen the whole sketch.
