In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “Mais... dehors les romanos !” is a common card of the Memes FR pack, number 1881 of the collection, and the 753rd best-known meme of its 3499 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.
What does the “Mais... dehors les romanos !” meme mean?
The phrase is the cry of a man convinced he is in his own home, facing invaders he lumps together as the “romanos”. It is funny for its pompous tone and deliberate anachronism. People use it to jokingly kick out a pushy roommate, guests who overstay their welcome, or tourists on a terrace. It also announces that you are reclaiming your couch, your room or your table. The effect comes from the gap between an ordinary situation and the vocabulary of a medieval count.
Where does the “Mais... dehors les romanos !” meme come from?
The line comes from Les Visiteurs, a comedy directed by Jean-Marie Poiré and released in France on 27 January 1993. The film follows Godefroy de Montmirail, a count nicknamed “le Hardi” and played by Jean Reno, thrown from the medieval era to 1992 by a botched magic formula, along with his squire Jacquouille la Fripouille, played by Christian Clavier. Poiré and Clavier co-wrote the script. The clash between a knight and the modern world drives the whole film and supplies plenty of cult lines. This one, shouted by a Montmirail making himself at home, left the screen to become a staple of chats, comments and edits.
