In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “Maïté and the eel” is an epic card of the Memes FR pack, number 1666 of the collection, and the 753rd best-known meme of its 3512 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.
What does the “Maïté and the eel” meme mean?
The meme evokes older, spectacular, unfiltered TV where a feisty cook from southwest France handled a living ingredient on camera. People post it to recall a TV memory, react to a rough gesture or ultra-fast cooking, or illustrate a larger-than-life character. The feeling is mixed: nostalgia, amusement at Maïté's vigor, and a bit of discomfort at the roughness of some culinary practices of the time. The clip is also a generational marker.
Where does the “Maïté and the eel” meme come from?
Maïté, born Marie-Thérèse Ordonez (née Badet), was a French cook and TV host from Rion-des-Landes. She co-hosted La Cuisine des mousquetaires with Micheline Banzet-Lawton; it launched on 22 October 1983 on FR3 Aquitaine, went national from 1991 and ran until 1997. A June 1992 episode preserved by the INA archive shows the pair preparing an eel recipe, with Maïté stunning the animal with a pestle. The sequence is listed among her cult moments, alongside her 1984 ortolan tasting, and has been replayed countless times in retrospectives and on YouTube. Maïté died on 21 December 2024, aged 86, in her home town, which revived the circulation of the clips.
