What does the “Cartman’s iPad scene” meme mean?
The meme shows the spoiled child pushed to the extreme: anything goes to get the coveted object, including embarrassing family members in public. It is used to mock a disproportionate tantrum, emotional blackmail, or a toddler making a scene in a shop. It also works ironically to dramatise wanting a gadget, putting yourself in Cartman’s shoes in front of the latest must-have. The humour comes from the character’s audacity rather than from the line itself.
Where does the “Cartman’s iPad scene” meme come from?
The scene comes from South Park season 15, episode 1, “HumancentiPad”, first broadcast in the United States on 27 April 2011. Cartman, humiliated after claiming to own an iPad, goes to a Best Buy with his mother, Liane. When she balks at the price and suggests a cheaper Toshiba model, he berates her loudly, embarrassing her in front of other shoppers. Humiliated, she leaves without buying anything. Cartman tries to play innocent, but she does not fall for it. The excerpt has been reposted by many channels, which clipped and shared it as a meme.
