What does the “McRib” meme mean?
The meme expresses exaggerated, theatrical devotion to a limited-time food product. It transforms the frustration of temporary unavailability into a passionate civic complaint. The humor lies in the contrast between the low stakes (a sandwich) and the gravity of the official request.
Where does the “McRib” meme come from?
The phenomenon stems from a 2016 video featuring Xanthe Pajarillo, a resident of Santa Clarita, California, addressing her local city council. She officially begs elected officials to ensure local restaurants are restocked with the McRib, McDonald's famous boneless pork barbecue sandwich. While details about the initial publication remain unclear, Food52 confirms 2016 as the starting point. Pajarillo later composed a song and made an eleven-minute documentary about this obsession. The meme extends beyond the video itself; it encompasses an entire fan subculture surrounding the unpredictable return of the product, blending humor, nostalgia, and playful lobbying of local authorities.
