In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “Jetzt abschalten!” is a common card of the German Memes pack, number 67 of the collection, and the 150th best-known meme of its 300 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.
What does the “Jetzt abschalten!” meme mean?
The phrase calls, in a calmly authoritative tone, for an activity to stop or a device to be switched off, the way the voice that once closed the airwaves for the night did. People use it today to suggest, half serious and half joking, stopping there, closing the screen, or letting a circular discussion rest. It keeps a slightly ceremonious, old-fashioned flavor from an era when television and radio did not broadcast around the clock, and this signal marked a real evening ritual.
Where does the “Jetzt abschalten!” meme come from?
The “Sendeschluss” describes, in German broadcasting, the moment when a radio or television channel stopped its program for the day, before continuous broadcasting became the norm. This moment was marked by an announcement or a signal telling listeners and viewers to switch off their set, “jetzt abschalten”, before a break that could last until the next day. Made obsolete once round-the-clock programming became standard, the phrase has kept, long after the real Sendeschluss disappeared, a flavor both authoritative and nostalgic, reused to close an activity the way the airwaves themselves once closed for the night.
