In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “Da werden Sie geholfen” is a common card of the German Memes pack, number 70 of the collection, and the 150th best-known meme of its 300 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.
What does the “Da werden Sie geholfen” meme mean?
The phrase gently mocks an awkwardly worded sentence said with total confidence, as if the grammar mistake did nothing to undercut the promise of help. People use it to point out a clumsy turn of phrase delivered without any self-consciousness, or to promise help with an ironic nod to the ad it comes from. It keeps the slightly kitsch charm of those telephone-service commercials, where the approximate accent and syntax were exactly what made the ad funny.
Where does the “Da werden Sie geholfen” meme come from?
The line comes from a German advertising campaign for a telephone directory inquiry service, where a presenter told customers they would be helped using faulty German syntax, “da werden Sie geholfen” instead of the correct phrasing, a deliberate mismatch that made the ad instantly memorable. Aired in the 1990s, the commercial became so popular that the line detached itself from the spot to become an expression reused on its own, quoted as a reference whenever a promise of help is made with broken grammar but total confidence.
