What does the “Hawaii-Toast” meme mean?
Hawaiian toast calls to mind unpretentious, quick family cooking, often tied to childhood or improvised meals. Mentioning it conjures a precise image: a slice of bread baked under the grill with cheese, framed by a slightly kitschy 1950s-to-1980s vibe. People use it to talk about an easy, somewhat old-fashioned yet still tasty dish, or to fondly name this classic found in nearly every German household.
Where does the “Hawaii-Toast” meme come from?
Hawaiian toast is made by buttering a slice of bread, then topping it with a slice of cooked ham, pineapple and melted cheese before baking it. Its invention is generally credited to television chef Clemens Wilmenrod, who first presented it in Germany in 1955. He reportedly borrowed the recipe from his competitor and teacher Hans Karl Adam. According to historian Petra Foede, the dish may also be a German adaptation of the American “grilled Spamwich”, published as early as 1939 in a recipe booklet by the Hormel company, with cooked ham simply replacing Spam, which was not sold in German stores at the time.
