Where does the “Baccalà” meme come from?
Serena Brancale, who was born in Bari, released “Baccalà” on 7 February 2024 with producer Dropkick_m. The track blends Barese dialect, electronics and finger drumming. It spread first on TikTok and Instagram, where its refrain backed videos and stories, and by April 2024 it had passed a million plays on Spotify. Two fellow Apulian artists, Miss Fritty and Mama Marjas, criticised her on Instagram over her use of the dialect, and she answered in her stories. She then took the stage at the Sanremo Festival in 2025 with “Anema e core”.
