Where does the “Marò Slug” meme come from?
The game came out in August 2015 on the site maroslug.com. It was made by Emiliano Negri and Antonio Del Maestro, who kept the spirit of Metal Slug but swapped the scenery and characters. The two marò, Girone and Latorre, become “Big Round” and “The Tower”. The player must shoot through hordes of enemies to rescue the two escaped soldiers, and the soundtrack mixes an 8-bit anthem, a Panjabi MC track and music from the film Titanic. The real background is the arrest in India of two Italian soldiers after two fishermen were killed, mistaken for pirates. Press coverage also noted that the game is very hard.
