What does the “Susy the Club Kid” meme mean?
People bring up Susy, half fondly and half mockingly, to describe the "truzzo" look and slang of the late 2000s in Italy. Resharing the clip today works as a shorthand for that specific internet moment, one of Italy's earliest big Web 2.0 viral chains.
Where does the “Susy the Club Kid” meme come from?
The original footage shows a teenager nicknamed Susy, filmed in a street interview on Piazza del Popolo, performing an exaggerated version of "truzzo" slang and mannerisms, a blend of emo aesthetics and club-kid attitude. Uploaded in 2009, it racked up millions of views across YouTube, Facebook and the Virgilio portal, eventually getting picked up by Italian TV news. Within weeks the production collective M9v Production (Max Squillace, Nico Di Campli, Marco Romeo) turned her lines into a dance track, "Sono Susy Una Truzza," released on 19 May 2009 with a music video directed by Francesco Ferraiuolo.
