What does the “Russiano” meme mean?
The meme lightly mocks patriotic renaming, applied here to a simple cup of coffee. It comes out when somebody swaps a name to leave a personal mark, when a serious idea sounds like a gag, or to comment on a tasty detail: the name was reportedly suggested in the exchange by an Armenian delegate.
Where does the “Russiano” meme come from?
In 2016, video titles announced that Dmitry Medvedev had proposed renaming the Americano coffee as “Russiano”. In the exchange, an Armenian delegate is said to have suggested the name. The topic then looped on YouTube through tutorials such as “How to make Russiano?”, “Russiano by Medvedev’s recipe” and a variant spelling, “Rusiano”. The drink, a coffee lengthened with hot water, thus sat at the heart of a small Runet phenomenon.
