What does the “Pochoumim!” meme mean?
It is shouted as a starter pistol: a chat room dozing off, a party unsure of itself, a thread waiting for a spark. The word wakes everybody up with a hint of friendly provocation. It also works as a wink, saying you feel like shaking the whole place for no particular reason.
Where does the “Pochoumim!” meme come from?
“Pochoumim” is a loosely spelled version of the Russian call “poshumim”, roughly “let’s make some noise”. It settled on Runet, the Russian-language web, in 2013, as the meme’s listing tells. The simplified spelling, in writing as in speech, makes it feel like a rallying cry rather than a built sentence. It travels as pictures, captions and quick replies in online conversations.
