In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “Manul cat” is a legendary card of the Russian Memes pack, number 122 of the collection, and the 4th best-known meme of its 300 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.
What does the “Manul cat” meme mean?
The meme plays on the gap between how cuddly a small cat looks and how fierce the manul’s expression actually is. People use it to comment on a cute bad mood, a wish for quiet shown only through a stern stare, or to invite someone to relax despite looking unapproachable. “Pet the cat” works as an absurd instruction, since the caption itself makes clear the animal wants no such thing, which gives the meme its gently biting humor.
Where does the “Manul cat” meme come from?
A photo of a manul (a small wild cat from the steppes of Central Asia, known for its dense fur and round pupils that give it a permanently sour look) started circulating on the Runet in 2008, usually captioned “pet the cat”. Pictures of the animal, often taken at zoos or reserves where it is occasionally kept, spread across Russian-language blogs and forums of the era, including LiveJournal, prized for the comic contrast between its soft look and stern stare. The manul became one of the recurring faces of early Runet animal memes, before short video formats later took over.
