What does the “Tmok” meme mean?
People caption an adorable photo with “Tmok”, usually an animal nudging its nose or paw toward the camera for a cuddle. The word imitates the quick sound of a kiss and belongs to the intentionally childish “kitten speak” register, where everything gets said in soft diminutives. It is used to play up the tenderness of a scene, with no mean irony attached: a cuddly little word meant to melt whoever reads it.
Where does the “Tmok” meme come from?
The “Tmok” meme appears in 2017 on the Russian-language internet (Runet), attached to posts showing an animal leaning in for a hug. The caption borrows from “kitten speak”, a widespread register in Runet animal-photo groups where captions mimic a childlike, diminutive-heavy voice. “Tmok” acts as a tiny kiss sound stuck under the picture to push the cuteness of the scene even further. The format repeated from post to post with that same short caption until it became a reflex line for any photo of an animal asking for affection.
