What does the “Bled Nevelny” meme mean?
The meme reuses an edited image where Alexei Navalny's name is garbled into "Bled Nevelny", in broken Russian that imitates a dismissive way of referring to him. It circulates as an ironic comment on how certain official or pro-government voices talked about the opposition figure with contempt, almost pretending not to know his name. The humor comes from the deliberate gap between how significant the person is and the casualness of butchering his name.
Where does the “Bled Nevelny” meme come from?
The “Bled Nevelny” meme appeared on the Runet in 2017, built around an edited photo of Vladimir Putin, president of the Russian Federation, on which the name of Alexei Navalny, Russia's leading opposition figure at the time, is deliberately misspelled as "Bled Nevelny". The edit satirically mimics a voice that would mock the opposition figure by pretending to struggle with pronouncing his name correctly, and it circulated on VKontakte as an example of that mocking register aimed at him. Specific details about the original image and its author remain thin beyond this circulation.
