What does the “MLG Gaming Montage” meme mean?
The genre pokes fun at the self-serious “pro gamer” highlight reel: instead of real feats, it shows a whiffed shot or a failed jump dressed up with the same over-the-top editing, pointing up the gap between the swagger of the presentation and the actual gameplay. It is an affectionate jab at the Major League Gaming esports scene and its visual tics, and it grew into its own recognizable style, reused even by creators who are not making videos about gaming at all.
Where does the “MLG Gaming Montage” meme come from?
The serious version of this editing style came from esports teams, popular from the early 2010s onward, who posted highlight compilations set to electronic music. The earliest known parody was uploaded on March 10, 2011 by YouTuber Jamal Nigrumz, mocking the style with World of Warcraft footage. The subreddit r/montageparodies, launched on May 18, 2012, became the format's community hub, with creators such as Snipars, NFKRZ and Vagabonds producing their own entries. Over time the parodies picked up running references tied to the MLG scene itself: Mountain Dew cans, spilled Doritos bags nodding to the so-called “Doritosgate” controversy, sunglasses dropping onto the logo, and jokes about the Illuminati or “420 blaze it.”

How to use the “MLG Gaming Montage” meme
- A video gets called an “MLG montage” once it piles on dubstep, excessive zooms, and gamer in-jokes purely to mock the genre.
- The phrase also targets creators who treat their own mediocre clips too seriously, by wrapping them in the exact same over-the-top editing.
- More broadly, it now covers any content that apes the loud, dubstep-driven aesthetic of early-2010s esports highlight reels.
