What does the “My Sides” meme mean?
“My sides” describes laughter pushed to the point of pain, as if your ribs or diaphragm were cramping. It upgrades a plain LOL when the reaction is genuine and uncontrollable. You see it in comment sections, forums and chats, often in exaggerated forms like “my sides are in orbit,” where your ribs supposedly launch into space from laughing. It is quick, informal and works in any language of the web, which explains why it has survived for decades.
Where does the “My Sides” meme come from?
The idea of laughing until your sides hurt showed up in 1996 on a list of internet acronyms as “laughing ’til my sides hurt.” The short “my sides” appears in October 2000 in blog comments, then spreads through Usenet and forums in the early 2000s. It turns up on several 4chan boards in February 2008. Urban Dictionary defined it in October 2012, the same month a Facebook page called “Oh My Sides” began. During 2012 and 2013 it circulated on gaming forums, 9gag, Imgur and FunnyJunk, and became a common Tumblr tag. The variant “my sides are in orbit” is traced to August 28, 2012 on 4chan’s /sp/ board and reached Reddit by February 2013. A Yahoo Answers post in June 2013 explained the orbit joke, and by September 2013 the phrase had passed 500 uses on Reddit.
