In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “Hack 127.0.0.1” is a rare card of the Memes World series 75, number 22469 of the collection, and the 45th best-known meme of its 300 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.
What does the “Hack 127.0.0.1” meme mean?
The address 127.0.0.1, known as “localhost”, always points back to the computer you are using. Telling someone to hack it means telling them to attack their own box. The meme captures mockery of the overconfident wannabe whose bragging backfires. Among IT people it is also an in-joke: you drop it to tease a newcomer, or to wink at the idea that there is no place like home, as in “there’s no place like 127.0.0.1”.
Where does the “Hack 127.0.0.1” meme come from?
It all starts with a chat log posted on April 6, 2005 by the German hip hop site StopHipHop, taken from its IRC channel. A user nicknamed “bitchchecker” threatens to hack another member, “Elch”. Elch hands over 127.0.0.1 as his IP, and the attacker ends up crashing his own computer several times. An English translation appeared on the Total Illusions forum on April 9, 2005, and the story reached Slashdot on April 27 as “The Planet’s Most Moronic Hacker”. The Museum of Hoaxes questioned its authenticity the very next day. A User Friendly webcomic strip from May 2001 had already shown a hacker attacking his own address. Since then the log has been reposted on many forums and blogs, including Ubuntu Forums in 2008 and Network World in 2011, which keeps the joke alive for new generations of users.
