In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “Pokebra” is a rare card of the Memes World series 75, number 22470 of the collection, and the 57th best-known meme of its 300 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.
What does the “Pokebra” meme mean?
The Pokébra blends two worlds, Pokémon fandom and fashion, in a deliberately awkward way. The meme is funny because it shows fan creativity taken very far, with a proud dose of embarrassment. People mention it when talking about an over-the-top fan costume, a sincere but excessive craft project, or to tease heavy merchandising. It became a textbook case of geek culture turned into everyday wear. It remains a shorthand for fandom taken gloriously far.
Where does the “Pokebra” meme come from?
The first photo went up on Tumblr on November 22, 2010, posted by Selina Zawacki, who modeled the piece she made. She said a webcomic’s last panel inspired it. On November 25 she shared it on Reddit, where it reached the front page with over 2,700 upvotes. On November 29 the blog Unreality Magazine covered it. The craze carried on through 2011: a how-to video in April, a dedicated Tumblr in May, and in June SlashGear reported that online shops were selling them. Etsy sellers offered custom versions, and spin-offs from other universes, notably Super Mario, appeared. In early 2012 blogs began collecting the best examples.
