In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “Jack Blankenship” is a rare card of the Memes World series 75, number 22474 of the collection, and the 57th best-known meme of its 300 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.
What does the “Jack Blankenship” meme mean?
The giant grimace stands for committed silliness in the service of the team. It is funny because one twisted face, blown up huge, can supposedly break the focus of professional athletes. People use it to cheer a goofy superfan, to show deliberate distraction, or simply to say “look at this face”. It also captures the spirit of American college crowds, who invent endless ways to sway a game with plenty of self-mockery.
Where does the “Jack Blankenship” meme come from?
Big-head cutouts, waved by students to rattle visiting players, had been part of American college basketball since the early 2000s. Jack Blankenship, a freshman at Alabama, turned his own grimace into one. He explained that he had pulled that face since age 13 as a joke among friends. The first photo with the cutout was posted to Reddit on February 4, 2012, from a game against Ole Miss. On February 14, a photographer caught him at the Florida game and a local newspaper ran the picture that night. The next day it exploded on Reddit and Tumblr. On February 16, ESPN and Yahoo! Sports picked it up, and on February 17 a video interview showed how he makes the face.
