In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “Pyong” is a rare card of the Memes World series 75, number 22475 of the collection, and the 57th best-known meme of its 300 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.
What does the “Pyong” meme mean?
Pyong is less a joke than a screen companion: a cute, simple character that acts out your feelings for you. A smile, a dance or a grumpy face can replace a whole sentence in a chat. The meme evokes 2000s nostalgia, when you picked an animated avatar for your messenger and decorated your messages with custom smileys. People bring it out to say hello, to react warmly, or to wink at that vanished era of the internet.
Where does the “Pyong” meme come from?
The character was drawn and uploaded in March 2006 on DeviantArt by user tiggerfactory, whom Know Your Meme identifies as Elisa Kwon, a Korean illustrator based in São Paulo, Brazil. On March 16, 2006, another user, po-po-tan, created an official fan club page. The fox grew popular on MSN, especially as a profile avatar. On September 10, 2007, a user shared a collection of 159 “Red Fox” smileys. Pyong later reached 4chan, where a papercraft pattern was made on the origami board. By 2011, the artist’s page kept only a Flash dress-up game of the character. Despite those modest beginnings, the fox also inspired fan art, such as drawings of it as a Pokémon trainer, and kept a small nostalgic community.
