What does the “Cool Cat Saves the Kids” meme mean?
Mentioning Cool Cat Saves the Kids means pointing at something made with good intentions but so awkward it turns hypnotic. People use it for a moral lesson delivered with zero subtlety, a shoestring project taken extremely seriously, or anything so strange you cannot tell whether to laugh or worry. The feeling is a mix of fondness and disbelief, the same affection bad-movie fans have for classics of the genre. Fans quote it with a smile, never really out of spite.
Where does the “Cool Cat Saves the Kids” meme come from?
Derek Savage wrote and directed the film, building on his Cool Cat children’s book series that began in 2010. Vivica Fox and Erik Estrada appear in it. The trailer went up on the official Cool Cat YouTube channel on June 11, 2014, and the Everything is Terrible Facebook page shared it that July. The feature itself was released on February 1, 2015. On February 28, 2015, YouTuber YourMovieSucks posted a two-part review, and other creators such as I Hate Everything followed. In March he published two remixes, “Cat Grips” and “To Cat a Predator.” In early November 2015 a copyright claim took one review down, which only drew more eyes to the whole saga. The film now sits beside The Room and Birdemic among works loved for their flaws.
