In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “Poop Emoji” is a rare card of the Memes World series 75, number 22481 of the collection, and the 64th best-known meme of its 300 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.
What does the “Poop Emoji” meme mean?
The Poop Emoji says “that is bad” without any meanness: people drop it under a poor post, a disappointing movie or a failed idea. Its smile softens the verdict and makes it a tool for self-mockery when commenting on one’s own blunder. Everyone reads it their own way, and some even see chocolate ice cream. The contrast between the subject and the friendly face does the work: the judgment is harsh, yet the packaging stays funny. That is why it shows up as often among friends as under public messages.
Where does the “Poop Emoji” meme come from?
The emoji joined Unicode 6.0 in 2010 and appeared on Apple’s iPhone. Its first design was realistic, with flies circling, before it received a smiling face in the spirit of the manga Dr. Slump. Darick Tong, Darren Lewis, Takeshi Kishimoto and Katsuhiko Momoi are credited among its creators. Gmail reportedly hesitated at first, worried it might upset users, before being persuaded of its usefulness. Dazed, the Huffington Post and BuzzFeed commented on its popularity, and it inspired pillows and slippers. On November 2, 2017, BuzzFeed reported a dispute inside the Unicode Consortium over adding a frowning version for 2018. Typographers Michael Everson and Andrew West opposed such additions, judging the process too commercial and frivolous. The emoji’s makers eventually convinced the email service that the symbol had a real use.
