What does the “NONONONO Cat” meme mean?
This format illustrates a categorical refusal, humorous panic, or indignation towards something deemed unbearable. It transforms the cat's meow into a human voice stubbornly repeating its opposition. The dominant emotion is one of fierce but funny resistance, often used to react to awkward scenes or absurd ideas in online discussions.
Where does the “NONONONO Cat” meme come from?
The meme originates from a video recorded by Andreï Derioujenko, also known as MrDron059, on YouTube. The filming took place in 2004 in Perm, Russia, when a friend of an acquaintance visited the family. Marquis, a domestic Siberian cat, began vocalizing intensely in front of her for no apparent reason. The video was uploaded to YouTube on September 28, 2011. It quickly gained popularity in Russia, reaching about a million views in a few days. The meme derives its strength from the striking resemblance between the sound produced by the cat and the phrase 'no no no no' spoken by a human. Remixes later integrated this sound, sometimes referencing Amy Winehouse's song *Rehab*, thereby amplifying its international spread.
