What does the “On va manger des chips !” meme mean?
The line announces a tiny piece of good news as though it were an event. Above all it lets one person play both parts: the one who gets excited over nothing and the one nothing moves. In a group chat it can rescue an unambitious evening plan, precisely because it admits in advance that the plan has no ambition.
Where does the “On va manger des chips !” meme come from?
The line comes from La Classe américaine, a 1993 French television film by Michel Hazanavicius and Dominique Mézerette built from Warner footage redubbed in French. The method was to rewrite the dialogue of existing sequences entirely, which produces quotable lines with no original context — this is the most reused of them. The film became a cult object through reruns and extracts, and its lines now circulate far from the scenes they belong to.
- 1993La Classe américaine airs; its redubbed dialogue produces the line.
