What does the “Over 9000 Hours In Ms Paint” meme mean?
The humor relies on absurd hyperbole: pretending that a childish drawing required titanic work. This allows creators to gently mock their own technical limitations or ridicule artistic pretension against a software as simple as Paint. It is a way of saying 'it's bad, but I put my heart into it' with heavy sarcasm.
Where does the “Over 9000 Hours In Ms Paint” meme come from?
The exact origin of the full phrase is undocumented, but its roots trace back to early 2000s internet forums. On November 15, 2004, user Gororules posted on TRMK discussing time spent on sprites. The hyperbolic usage appears clearly in July 2005 on the Winamp forum, where gaekwad2 mentioned 'at least 500 hours'. Shortly after, on September 4, 2005, MidnyteRayne sarcastically replied '5,000,000 hours in MS Paint' on Newgrounds in a thread about the series ReBoot. The expression became a snowclone, allowing variation of the number and software to joke about the technical simplicity of amateur digital works.

- July 2005First clear occurrence of temporal exaggeration on the Winamp forum with '500 hours'.
