What does the “Principalement les machines” meme mean?
The line works because it is so disarmingly simple. Asked the open question of what he likes about the exhibition, the visitor answers “oh, the machines!”, which feels so obvious it turns comic, as if anything else could be expected at a machine show. People use it to answer a question that answers itself, to parody a street interview, or to show plain, unfiltered enthusiasm. The spontaneous “bah” adds to it, a mark of speech caught on the spot.
Where does the “Principalement les machines” meme come from?
The meme describes a reportage-style scene: someone asks a visitor what he likes about the exhibition, and he replies that it is the machines. The clip turned into a quotable line among French-speaking internet users, cut loose from its context, for its spontaneity and the obviousness of the reply. The short form “principalement les machines” became the meme’s title.
