In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “Qué mira bobo” is a rare card of the Memes FR pack, number 2933 of the collection, and the 753rd best-known meme of its 3496 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.
What does the “Qué mira bobo” meme mean?
In Argentine Spanish, “¿qué mirás, bobo?” is a flat, unbothered challenge: what are you staring at, fool? It lands because of who says it. Messi has a reputation for being calm and soft-spoken, so a sudden stare-down feels like a plot twist. People use it to shut down someone who is eyeing them, to fake-bristle at a friend, or to gloat after a hard-fought win. It is nearly always said with a grin, never as a real threat.
Where does the “Qué mira bobo” meme come from?
On 9 December 2022, Argentina met the Netherlands in a World Cup quarter-final at Lusail Stadium. The game finished 2-2 after extra time, with Wout Weghorst levelling for the Dutch in added time, and Argentina won 4-3 on penalties. Tempers were still high afterwards. While Messi was being interviewed on the pitch, he noticed Weghorst nearby and said “¿qué mirás, bobo?”, then “andá pa’llá”, meaning something like “get out of here”. Sports broadcasters, beIN Sports among them, shared the footage and it spread across social networks within hours. In Argentina the phrase ended up printed on shirts and other merchandise.
