In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “Rayayay” is a common card of the Memes FR pack, number 954 of the collection, and the 874th best-known meme of its 882 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.
What does the “Rayayay” meme mean?
There is nothing to understand, and that is the condition of its success. Carrying no meaning, the sound takes on whatever the picture under it supplies: triumph, irritation, surprise, weariness. The rolled eyes add the only useful cue, that of annoyance performed rather than felt. People use it as punctuation, to close a sequence or underline a botched move, and many reproduce it out loud without ever having seen the original video. That is how very short sound memes work: they spread by imitation.
Where does the “Rayayay” meme come from?
The post used as the card’s source dates from 1 March 2019 and comes from the account iconic_memes, a reposting account. The clip is tiny: a face to camera, the eyes going up, the exclamation, done. No web encyclopedia documents it, and the sources consulted do not identify the person filmed or the location, which is why the card attributes the scene to nobody. The missing author has not hindered its spread, quite the opposite: a one-second sound with no recognisable word pastes onto anything and travels by imitation more than by sharing. Its spelling varies with whoever writes it down, nobody having ever settled the number of syllables.
