In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “Mauvaise pioche” is a common card of the Memes FR pack, number 955 of the collection, and the 729th best-known meme of its 882 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.
What does the “Mauvaise pioche” meme mean?
The line names a bad draw rather than a mistake. That is its useful nuance: it pities the person who got it wrong instead of accusing them, since in a card game nobody picks their card. So it comes out after an unlucky hire, a disappointing restaurant, an assigned teammate, an object that breaks the day after purchase. Said about yourself it lets you take the hit without explaining. Said about someone else it stays the polite version of a reproach, which is why it survives equally well in speech and in writing.
Where does the “Mauvaise pioche” meme come from?
The expression predates any meme: it belongs to card-game vocabulary, where the “pioche” is the stack you draw from blind. The card ties it to 1966 and to Le Grand Restaurant, directed by Jacques Besnard and starring Louis de Funès, whose tantrums and weary verdicts supplied a good share of the lines still quoted in French. The clip used as the source comes from that film, posted by the channel clacyr. The sources consulted do not, however, document the exact scene the phrase would attach to, so this article names none: the reliability of that link is given as low. What is certain is current usage, where the line works alone, with no reference to the film at all.
