What does the “Scary Prank Reaction Videos” meme mean?
The core emotion is violent surprise mixed with nervous laughter. The format exploits tension created by an apparently simple game to break concentration with a jump scare. It also expresses shared amusement at the victim's naivety in falling for a deceptive digital trap.
Where does the “Scary Prank Reaction Videos” meme come from?
The phenomenon relies on interactive Flash games appearing around 2002, spread via emails and forums before YouTube. The best-documented example is the Scary Maze Game, often attributed to developer Jeremy Winterrowd in 2003. This game required navigating a dark path until a frightening face and loud scream abruptly interrupted the play. A video showing a young boy screaming and fleeing his screen circulated massively, becoming the visual reference for this genre. These contents acted as simple digital traps, exploiting user curiosity and concentration to maximize initial shock value.
