Where does the “Snapchat Gender Change Filter” meme come from?
Snapchat’s "gender-swap" filter was deployed in May 2019, likely around May 11 or the week preceding May 16. It alters facial features in real time: beard and angular jaw for masculinity; longer hair, makeup, and rounded features for femininity. It does not change biological sex but visual presentation. The phenomenon spread massively on Snapchat, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok through posts showing the transformation. A notable viral video shows a man singing both parts of Evanescence’s "Bring Me to Life," shared on Twitter on May 16, 2019, by user Latifa. The singer’s identity and the video’s original creation date remain unknown. No specific show is identified as the sole origin; news and entertainment content subsequently commented on or reused the filter.
