What does the “Texts From Hillary” meme mean?
The meme plays on the contrast between the gravity of a Secretary of State and the casualness of SMS language. It projects an image of Clinton as a 'cool' figure, master of her emotions, capable of digesting crises with humor. The dominant emotion is amusement at this detached and authoritative posture, often used to mock or admire her ability to remain unfazed under media pressure.
Where does the “Texts From Hillary” meme come from?
The original photograph was taken by Kevin Lamarque (Reuters) in October 2011 during a flight from Malta to Tripoli. It shows Hillary Clinton on a C-17, wearing sunglasses and holding a BlackBerry. In April 2012, Stacy Lambe and Adam Smith, two Washington communicators, published the 'Texts From Hillary' blog on Tumblr. They transformed this single image into a series of panels illustrating fictional SMS conversations. The project went viral quickly, relayed by social networks and the press. Users then created their own variants by reusing the same visual support to invent new humorous exchanges around political figures.
