Where does the “Feminist Ryan Gosling” meme come from?
The Tumblr blog was launched by Danielle Henderson, a gender studies student at the University of Wisconsin, on October 8, 2011. She transformed difficult course notes into humorous flashcards to memorize theorists. The format draws from the “Fuck Yeah Ryan Gosling” phenomenon (2008) and its “Hey Girl” subgenre. Images feature pensive portraits of the actor overlaid with phrases inspired by feminist theory. The content originates from edited static images, not any video or show. Virality was immediate, notably after being picked up by Jezebel within twenty-four hours.
