In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “Un petit coup de polish” is a rare card of the Memes FR pack, number 813 of the collection, and the 261st best-known meme of its 790 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.
What does the “Un petit coup de polish” meme mean?
The joke lives in the gap between a threat and the reaction it gets. A car is following the agent, and what strikes him is how well waxed it is. So the line does two jobs: it compliments, in earnest, anything kept with ridiculous care, a scrubbed car, a waxed floor, a screen without a single smudge; or it answers hostility with courtesy so excessive that the speaker seems to have missed the danger entirely. Either way the politeness is the punchline, defusing a moment by appearing to be completely beside the point.
Where does the “Un petit coup de polish” meme come from?
The line comes from OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies, a feature directed by Michel Hazanavicius and released in French cinemas in April 2006, with Jean Dujardin as the French spy Hubert Bonisseur de La Bath, sent to Egypt in the mid-1950s. The French Wikiquote collection places the line in the scene where the agent and Larmina discuss the automobile trailing them: OSS 117 calls it absolutely impeccable and offers to give it a bit of polish. The film parodies pre-war spy fiction, and its hero keeps producing remarks that sit sideways to the situation, which is why so many of his lines travel on their own. This one now circulates as short YouTube clips, as green-screen footage made to be reused, and as a TikTok sound laid over car-washing videos.
