What does the “Wololo !” meme mean?
The card announces a conversion: someone changes their mind, their team or their side, and you are the one who convinced them. It fits a colleague finally adopting your solution, a friend crossing over to your favourite show, or commenting on an excess of persuasion. The word is used on its own, almost as a verb, among players and well beyond them.
Where does the “Wololo !” meme come from?
Age of Empires II is a strategy game released in 1999; its monk can convert enemy units, and the ability comes with a chant whose “wololo” syllable is the most recognisable part. The sound was kept identical in Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, released in 2019: the most widely shared sound capture comes from that version, posted in March 2020. The word has long since left the game, used for any change of allegiance, and remains one of the series' best-known quotations.
