What does the “Eeny, meeny, miny, moe” meme mean?
This visual captures the anxiety of random selection where the stakes are life or death. By pairing a nursery rhyme with extreme violence, it highlights the absurdity of fate or absolute power. Where does the “Eeny, meeny, miny, moe” meme come from?
The scene originates from episode 7x01 of the American TV series The Walking Dead, titled 'The Day Will Come When You Won’t Be', which aired on AMC on October 23, 2016. The character Negan, played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan, kneels before Rick Grimes and his group. To decide who will be hit with his bat, Lucille, he chants the English nursery rhyme 'Eeny, meeny, miny, moe'. This traditional formula is usually used to select someone in a children's game. Here, it becomes a tool for psychological terror. Abraham Ford is chosen first, then Glenn Rhee after Daryl’s reaction. This pivotal moment was quickly isolated and repurposed by the internet community to create a viral meme usable in various humorous or dramatic contexts.
