The source photo was taken on June 26, 2003 by Reuters photographer Jeff J. Mitchell during Wimbledon and shows France’s Nicolas Escudé. On January 23, 2007, an anonymous user on 4chan’s /b/ board posted several mirrored versions of the picture, each zooming closer on the face, along with a text declaring the man king of space. On April 10, 2007 the line surfaced on the WrongPlanet.net forum, and in 2008 it appeared in a 4chan thread of parody songs. Between 2009 and 2012 it moved to many forums and humor sites, where “4CHONS” was swapped for the host community’s name. The anonymous author has never been identified.
