What does the “Snart / His name is Snart” meme mean?
“His name is Snart” is a pure absurdist gag. A solemn painted figure is given a silly name, delivered as if it were obvious, and the clash between the two is the whole joke. There is no hidden message. People use it to hijack an image, slip in a fandom reference, or answer a question about a character with total confidence and zero logic. The stranger the edited background, the better the meme lands, which is why it kept spreading through fan communities for months.
Where does the “Snart / His name is Snart” meme come from?
The cutout comes from Madonna with Child, a 1965 painting by Colombian artist Fernando Botero. In late 2014, a Tumblr user called Hakvryvv posted the child Jesus isolated from the canvas with the caption “His name is Snart.” The post was reblogged heavily and gathered roughly 170,500 notes in about six months, though its three most-reblogged source blogs were later deleted. A single-topic blog named Snart-the-Cult then began publishing edits, and fandoms picked up the figure, dropping it into worlds like Splatoon and JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. Know Your Meme added its entry in April 2015 and marked it as confirmed. Snart-the-Cult began posting on a February 10, though the reference page does not give the year, and fans of several franchises have remixed the figure ever since.
