In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “Useless Box” is a rare card of the Memes World series 76, number 22508 of the collection, and the 4th best-known meme of its 298 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.
What does the “Useless Box” meme mean?
The Useless Box is funny because of its total absurdity: clever mechanics working to produce nothing. It stands for ingenuity spent on the pointless, or a comical stubbornness that fights the user. People reference it to describe a futile situation, an action that cancels the previous one, or a gadget that amuses more than it serves. Makers treat it as a build challenge, with lit, expressive or more elaborate versions.
Where does the “Useless Box” meme come from?
The idea is credited to AI researcher Marvin Minsky in 1952, and mathematician Claude Shannon then built a prototype called “The Ultimate Machine.” In August 1958 author Arthur C. Clarke wrote about the device in Harper’s, unsettled that it did nothing but turn itself off. In April 2008, YouTuber Michael Seedman’s video of his LeaveMeAloneBox drew public attention, while a Japanese version nicknamed “Automatized Hikikomori Unit” became a hit on Nico Nico Douga. In December 2009 Brett Coulthard posted his version and plans on Instructables, and Make magazine featured the project in July 2010. In January 2013, Solarbotics and ThinkGeek sold kits.
